Junior Mariners sweep twinbill

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Junior Mariners allowed only a combined two runs on the day and swept a 9-1 and 3-1 doubleheader from Whitehall on Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field.

In the opener, Blake Altizer led the Mariners offensively with two hits and two RBI, while Mickey Pepper added two hits and a RBI, Zach Bingel a two-run single in a five-run fifth inning and Quenton Barber a double.

Brantley Marion went the first four innings for the pitching win.

The Mariners held a slim 2-1 lead when they scored five runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to break it open.

The second game was more competitive as the Railroaders hung in there until the end.

It was a 1-all tie when the Mariners (11-2) scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Altizer walked and went to second on a passed ball, Tristan Archambault singled Altizer to third, Gerrit Rietsema executed a perfect suicide-squeeze bunt to plate Altizer, and Archambault stole home when he missed a sign and thought another suicide-squeeze bunt was coming.

Altizer gave Clinton County a 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the fourth.

Pepper started on the mound and went the first five innings and Barber picked up the win in relief.

Barber, Altizer and Archambault had the lone hits for the Mariners.

“It was a great day — we actually got to play after four rainouts,” said Mariners coach Gary Duquette, “We played great defense and got great pitching. The hitting was a little rusty, but we were able to score in the end.”
