Saranac girls, boys win league openers

PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac girls’ basketball team used a strong defensive effort Saturday to open its season with a 44-24 victory over Saranac Lake in the Coaches vs. Cancer CVAC Challenge held at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Victoria Phaneuf paced the Chiefs with 10 points, while Kaitlyn Bowman was next with nine. Kayla Napper finished with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Nicole Viscardo scored nine points for the Red Storm.

Saranac held a 30-19 advantage after three quarters and outscored Saranac Lake, 14-5, in the fourth to pull away.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort,” Saranac coach Tim Newell said. “We were able to create a lot of turnovers, and our guards did a nice job defending the perimeter. We also had 22 steals and 15 assists.

“But we had 23 turnovers and need to do a better job taking care of the basketball in transition. We need to make better decisions with the ball.”

PLATTSBURGH — The Chiefs escaped a tight first half by gaining some breathing room with a 17-7 third-quarter run for a win over the Red Storm in the second day of the Coaches vs. Cancer CVAC Challenge Saturday.

Forward John Maye paced the Chiefs (1-0) with 11 points, while teammate Connor Christopherson added nine.

Saranac head coach Brent Denis said his team’s pressure defense enabled its offense to generate momentum.

“We built a 15-point lead before the fourth quarter but didn’t shoot the ball particularly well,” Denis said. “In the second half, we missed countless layups. I thought our team came out and played a little hesitant, but that was to be expected in our first league contest.

“We held on and a win is a win.”

Kellen Munn scored 17 points for the Red Storm (0-1).
