Ellenburg Depot home destroyed by fire

ELLENBURG DEPOT — An Ellenburg Depot fire destroyed a one-story home at 184 Lake Roxanne Road early Sunday.

According to county fire officials, a tenant living in the home was not injured. The Red Cross Disaster Action Team gave a comfort kit and financial assistance for food, clothing and lodging to the individual, who was not named.

Six fire departments were called in for mutual aid for the blaze, which was reported at 5:37 a.m.

Ellenburg Depot Fire Chief Louis LaValley said that upon arrival at the scene, there was a fire in the basement. Fire crews tried to extinguish the fire through the basement window but the flames soon raged into the living area.

Mutual aid was provided from departments in  Ellenburg Center, Churubusco, Altona, Dannemora, Mooers and Lyon Mountain. Crews were on the scene until about 11:30 a.m., LaValley said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The property had been recently purchased by Betty J. Smith. Her brother was the tenant, according to Smith’s husband, Francis Smith. Several neighbors verified that the tenant had just moved in recently.

No further information was available.
