CVBL hill battle goes to Waldron


---- — LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners’ David Waldron outdueled the Fourth Ward A’s Joe Kirkpatrick in the first game Sunday for a 1-0 victory before the A’s gained a split on their Champlain Valley Baseball League doubleheader with a 9-5 decision in Game 2.

Waldron allowed two hits, struck out 11, walked one and retired the final 10 batters he faced. Kirkpatrick, meanwhile, surrendered five hits, struck out seven and walked one as both pitchers went the distance.

The lone run was scored in the fifth inning when Reilly Lawless doubled, took third on Justin Besaw’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Kris Chase’s single to right field.

The A’s Anthony Porcelli was the only player to get two hits in the contest.

In the second game, Michael Howard, Pat Shaughnessy and Kirkpatrick paced the A’s (3-3) with two hits apiece, with Howard getting a three-run triple and Shaughnessy two RBI. Brian Elliott added a double in support of winning pitcher Porcelli, who allowed eight hits in going the route.

Luke Weaver was the lone Lyon Mountain (4-2) player to get two hits as six other players had a hit each. Besaw took the loss.

PLATTSBURGH — The Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (2-4) rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the second game after the Fourth Ward Cardinals (4-2) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener.

In the first contest, the Timberjaxx tied it with a run in the seventh. But Craig Bujold’s two-out single drove in the game-winning run in the home half.

Steve Burris struck out nine and allowed seven hits in going the distance for the win and Eric Rock fanned five and surrendered seven hits in taking the loss.

Alex LaFountain led the Cardinals with two hits and Joe Tolosky added a double.

D.J. Barber and Justin Mahan each had a double and single for the Timberjaxx.

In the nightcap, the Timberjaxx trailed, 5-2, entering the seventh. But Mahan tied the game with a two-run single and Russell Merrill’s RBI single drove in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Merrill and Jacques DeMars led the Timberjaxx with two hits each, with DeMars driving in three runs. The Timberjaxx had 10 hits in all.

Kyle Bisonette was the winning pitcher in relief and LaFountain took the loss in relief.

PLATTSBURGH — Meron’s Billy Davis tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and then attempted to be the winning pitcher in both games.

But Peabody’s scored three runs in the third inning and recorded a 4-2 win for a split on the day.

In the first game, Chris Roenbeck, Glenn Engstrom and Cliff Conners led the Expos with two hits each, with Roenbeck driving in two runs, and both Engstrom and Conners adding doubles.

Shane Perrotte accounted for three of the Padres’ four hits, with one being a double. The loss went to Matt Rivers.

In the second contest, Jeff Norton led Peabody’s (2-4) with two doubles, while Perrotte added a single and double, and Matt Hart two singles, with one of them driving in two runs in the fourth.

Frank Brogna, who went the first four innings for the pitching win, and Norton, the final three for the save, combined on a five-hitter.

Engstrom accounted for two of the five hits for the Expos (4-2).
