CVBL hill battle goes to Waldron

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners’ David Waldron outdueled the Fourth Ward A’s Joe Kirkpatrick in the first game Sunday for a 1-0 victory before the A’s gained a split on their Champlain Valley Baseball League doubleheader with a 9-5 decision in Game 2.

Waldron allowed two hits, struck out 11, walked one and retired the final 10 batters he faced. Kirkpatrick, meanwhile, surrendered five hits, struck out seven and walked one as both pitchers went the distance.

The lone run was scored in the fifth inning when Reilly Lawless doubled, took third on Justin Besaw’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Kris Chase’s single to right field.

The A’s Anthony Porcelli was the only player to get two hits in the contest.

In the second game, Michael Howard, Pat Shaughnessy and Kirkpatrick paced the A’s (3-3) with two hits apiece, with Howard getting a three-run triple and Shaughnessy two RBI. Brian Elliott added a double in support of winning pitcher Porcelli, who allowed eight hits in going the route.

Luke Weaver was the lone Lyon Mountain (4-2) player to get two hits as six other players had a hit each. Besaw took the loss.
