Area runners earn Footlocker honors

THE BRONX — Several area high-school cross country runners extended their cross country season by competing at the Footlocker Northeast Regional Race held at Van Cortlandt Park.

Margaret Champagne of Seton Catholic had the highest finish of the day, placing fourth in the Freshman Girls’ race in a time of 19:22. The lead pack accidently cut the course short after the first turn.

The official results suggested adding 17-25 seconds to the time for more accurate measure of predicted 5,000-meter time. Ciara Roche of Freehold, N.J. was the overall winner in 19:06.

Champagne was named earned First Team All-Northeast honors.

Melissa Whyman, also from Seton Catholic, was 15th, over all, in the Junior Girls’ race in a time of 21:37 for 5,000 meters. Christiana Rutkowski of Middletown, N.J. was the over-all winner in 19:52.

Whyman earned Second Team All-Northeast honors.

Josh Wade, of Saranac, finished 40th in the Junior Boys’ race in a time of 18:28.

Ashley Leta of Peru competed in the Girls’ Championship race. Leta finished 78th in a time of 20:51. Catarina Rocha of Peabody, Mass. was the over-all winner in a time of 17:49.

Edward Cheserek of Newark, N.J. was the Boys’ Championship winner in a time of 15:21.

The top 10 individual athletes in the championship races earned a spot to compete at Footlocker Nationals in San Diego, CA in December. Past local qualifiers from the North Country have included Dan Lennon of Peru (Peru HS), Mary Kate Champagne of Plattsburgh (Seton) and Josh McDougal of Peru (homeschooled)
