---- — SAUGERTIES — After losing a tough game to the Saratoga Junior Stampede on Saturday in the opening round of Zone Tournament play, the Clinton County Junior Mariners were chomping at the bit to get back on the field on Sunday.
That didn’t happen, however.
All of Sunday’s action was postponed because of rain and was pushed back to today.
“They called it a little prematurely, but what can you do,” said Mariners coach Gary Duquette. “We called a team meeting and I told the team that we weren’t going to play today (Sunday). The players were disappointed because they wanted to play.”
Instead, the Mariners will oppose the Stampede at 1 p.m. in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination event. Saratoga was beaten by the Middletown Cobras on Saturday following the Mariners’ contest with the Stampede.
If Clinton County wins, that will set up a 4 p.m. contest with Middletown. The Mariners need two wins over the Cobras. If the Mariners win, that will set up a 1 p.m. contest on Monday to determine who will advance to the states.
SENIOR BRACKET SET
Pairings for Wednesday’s opening round of the double-elimination New York State Senior American Legion Tournament, being held in Utica, have been announced.
Action will begin at 9 a.m. with District IX’s Middletown taking on District VIII’s West Seneca.
Next up will be the District IV champion Clinton County Senior Mariners opposing District VII’s Ferris-Goodridge, a team from the Rochester area featuring a number of players from Spencerport.
The final two games of the day has District VI’s Vestal against District V’s Smith Post 24, and District III’s Melvin Roads, which knocked off the Saratoga Stampede, versus Adrien Post #625, the host team.
Teams will then move into the winner’s and loser’s brackets for games on Thursday.
