Miners, Cardinals advance to finals


---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Lyon Mountain Miners and Fourth Ward Cardinals took the suspense out of Sunday’s Champlain Valley Baseball League semifinal playoffs at Lefty Wilson Field.

Both teams won their best-of-three series, 2-1, as the top-seeded Miners pulled away to a 7-1 victory over the fourth-seeded Fourth Ward A’s, while the third-seeded Cardinals rolled to a 14-3 win over the second-seeded Meron’s Expos.

The championship series will take place this coming Sunday in Lyon Mountain, with the first game of the doubleheader starting at noon.

MINERS 7, A’s 1

The Miners broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Troy Bouyea accounted for two doubles and three RBI for Lyon Mountain, while Reilly Lawless went three-for-three.

Winning pitcher David Waldron added two hits, including a home run, while Luke Weaver and Kyle Kowalowski chipped in with two hits each. Jerry Kowalowski and Scott Baker each doubled.

Waldron, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, went the distance for the pitching win as he fanned nine, walked three and surrendered four hits.

Matt Meunier had a RBI double for the A’s, while Jordan Gillespie, Jake Tolosky and Michael Howard added singles. Joe Kirkpatrick took the pitching loss.

The Cardinals rapped out 19 hits in defeating the Expos.

The Fourth Ward did all its scoring in two innings, scoring six in the second inning and eight in the fourth.

Joe Tolosky, Frank Buksa, C.J. Worley and Brian Latulipe led the way with three hits apiece, with Tolosky getting a double and four RBI and Buksa a double and two RBI.

Travis Legacy chipped in with a triple and single, Craig Bujold a home run, Alex LaFountain and Steve Burris with a double each, and Tom Neale and Nate Durkee with singles. Neale drove in two runs.

Burris struck out six and allowed seven hits in going the distance for the pitching win.

Losing pitcher Billy Davis led the Expos with two doubles, a single and two RBI. Cliff Conners added a double, while Mark Passino, Jordan Woods and Mike Bergman rapped a single each.
