Community turkey fest planned

CROWN POINT — Crown Point churches and many businesses have joined together so residents who live alone or are financially strapped will have a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving.

“The meal is designed to rekindle friendship and promote fellowship in our community,” Pastor David Hirtle, one of the organizers, wrote in an email.

“We are gratefully looking for staff to help us ensure the success of our community meal.”

The meal will be served at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Creek Road in Crown Point from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27.

There will be no charge for the community meal, which is a collaborative effort among the faith communities of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Crown Point United Methodist Church and the First Congregational Churches.

“Many individual members of the Crown Point area are also joining us to make this a true community time of fellowship and thanksgiving,” Hirtle said.

He expressed thanks for donations and help to: Debro’s On The Way Café, A&S Custom, Crown Point Telephone, Crown Point Citgo, Hap’s Store, Village Auto, Crown Point Teachers Association, Crown Point Post Office workers, Champlain National Bank, Gunnison’s Orchard, Torri’s Hair Dresser, the Knapp Senior Citizens Club and Crown Point Chamber of Commerce.

Hirtle said the meal will be served with locally grown and prepared items as much as possible.

He said Gunnison’s has donated the apples for the pies, the team at the Crown Point Post Office is giving 50 pounds of locally grown potatoes, and the spuds will be peeled and readied by the folks at the Knapp Club.

Debro’s Cafe is making stuffing, and Crown Point Telephone and Technology, Champlain National Bank and the Congregational Church are making homemade rolls.

Crown Point Citgo and Hap’s are supplying juice and milk for the children. Village Auto will provide vegetables, the Hammond Library is donating cranberry sauce, and condiments will be provided by Torri’s.
