PSU women complete weekend sweep of Buffalo State

BUFFALO — The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team posted a 5-0 win for the second-straight afternoon to secure the weekend sweep at Buffalo State in ECAC West play Sunday.

The Cardinals (9-0-1, 5-0) got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in a 3:36 span in the opening frame. Allison Era scored on the power-play at the 8:23 mark on assists from Teal Gove and Jenny Kistner. Two and a half minutes later, Kistner netted her seventh of the year to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead. Emma Rutherford added a short-handed marker at 11:59, extending the lead to three goals.

“We wanted to come out and take the game to (Buffalo State),” Plattsburgh head coach Kevin Houle said. “We accomplished what we set out to do and won the game in the first period. Yet, we didn’t play particularly well in the second.”

Kistner opened the second stanza with her second goal of the afternoon at the 3:30 mark.

Plattsburgh added one more in the third when Era also tallied her second of the day with 3:27 remaining in regulation.

“We let our guard down in the second and for whatever reason got sloppy,” Houle said. “We didn’t make passes or protect the puck. We had a lot of turnovers but were fortunate to keep the puck out of the net.”

Era finished the day with two goals and two helpers, while Kistner chipped in a pair of goals and an assist.

“The forward line of Era, Kistner, and (Emma) Rutherford have been really productive for us,” Houle said. “All three had a really strong performance (Sunday). They’re a dominant group and are capable of being the best line in the country.”

Plattsburgh’s Sydney Aveson recorded 13 saves to earn her first shutout of the season. Bengals goaltender Jordan Lee suffered the loss, stopping 35 of the 40 shots she faced.
