Essex, Franklin Literacy Volunteers seeks tutors

PORT HENRY — As the state readies its replacement for the High School General Equivalency Diploma exam, Literacy Volunteers of Essex and Franklin Counties is anticipating a rush of adult learners.

The upcoming Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) will replace the current GED exam for individuals seeking a high-school equivalency-diploma, Literacy Volunteers Executive Director Maria Burke said.

“While most people think ‘back to school’ refers to children only, there are thousands of adults who also enroll in adult literacy programs across the country during this time of the year,” she said by email.

“There are three upcoming tutor training session that we will host throughout our two-county service region. There’s not much time left.”

She said the old GED was rigorous, computer-based, and test access by the State Education Department was limited.

“The new test should be ready to roll out in early 2014. It, too, will be more rigorous, but more accessible — and still available in a paper and pencil format.”

TUTOR TRAININGS

Literacy Volunteers has scheduled the first Tutor Training Orientation for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at its Port Henry offices. The second is at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the Literacy Volunteers Malone office, and the last is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Saranac Lake location.

Burke invites people to become tutors.

“In order to support these adult learners, Literacy Volunteers relies heavily upon dedicated volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one or small-group instruction to native and non-native English speakers,” she said.

“Volunteer tutors must be patient, compassionate, flexible and willing to give at least two hours a week to his or her adult learner.

“Tutors are expected to attend the tutor training prior to being matched with a student.”
