---- — MIDDLETOWN — The Clinton County Junior Mariners’ impressive seven-game winning streak to open the season ended Sunday.
The Mariners (7-1), who recorded two one-sided victories on Saturday, posted an 8-3 decision over the Ridgefield, Conn. U17 team earlier on Sunday in the semifinals of the Middletown Cobras Tournament.
But in the finals, the Mariners dropped a 7-4 decision to the Warrick Monarchs to finish 3-1 in the two-day event.
“We were due for a game like that,” said Mariners’ coach Gary Duquette. “Unfortunately, it came in the championship game.”
In Clinton County’s win over Ridgefield, Zach Bingel and Caleb Keysor led the way offensively, with Bingel finishing with a single, double and three RBI and Keysor three singles. Quenton Barber added a double.
Nate Stanton pitched the first four innings to get the victory.
Ridgefield held a 2-1 lead before the Mariners erupted for five runs in the third for a 6-2 advantage.
“We’ve been playing absolutely fantastic baseball and that win gave us a 7-0 record,” said Duquette. “I couldn’t be happier with the way we’ve been playing as a team.
“But then we ran into some adversity in our second game.”
Warrick broke a 4-all tie with two runs in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to make it 7-4.
“We made five errors and only three of their runs were earned,” said Duquette. “We also walked six.
“But we still battled right to the end and felt we were going to win it in the seventh.”
Clinton County had just three hits. Barber, who was the losing pitcher, rapped a long two-run double, while Stanton added a RBI single and Ryan Whalen a single.
“Our pitching, hitting and defense have been great up until our last game,” said Duquette. “But we went 3-1 in the tournament and saw some good baseball. It was a fun tournament for us and the kids enjoyed it.”
The Mariners are back on the field on Tuesday when they host the Post 326 Adirondacks in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Lefty Wilson Field.
