Price Chopper recalls ground beef SCHENECTADY — Price Chopper Supermarkets is voluntarily recalling select packages of USDA ground beef with expiration dates of Sept. 16 through Oct. 5.
The recall is based on information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Fairbank Farms — a supplier of several northeast food chains that is believed to have distributed beef containing possible E. Coli contamination.
The varieties of ground beef in question are ground round, ground sirloin, 80 percent lean ground beef, 80 percent lean chili meat, 93 percent lean grind, 96 percent lean grind and meatloaf mix.
Ground chuck and Certified Angus ground beef are not included in this recall.
Consumers are encouraged to check their freezers for these varieties of ground beef bearing the dates provided and to return any that are found to the closest Price Chopper for a full refund.
For more information, call AFA, the supplier that initiated the recall, at 1-877-546-0122. More information can also be obtained by calling the Price Chopper Customer Call Center at 1-800-666-7667 and using option 3 or by visiting the Price Chopper web site at www.pricechopper.com.
G-P gives grant to Lyon Mountain firefighters LYON MOUNTAIN — Georgia-Pacific has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Lyon Mountain Fire Department for equipment purchases.
The department was chosen from more than 100 fire departments in 28 states to receive 2009 Bucket Brigade funding for gear assemblies.
Georgia-Pacific Plattsburgh Mill Manager Kirk Stallsmith said the plant's personnel was pleased to see a local department receive the award.
"During tough economic conditions, this $5,000 grant is great news for the Lyon Mountain Fire Department, and we are proud to recognize them with this grant," he said.
The Bucket Brigade program started in 2006 and has awarded about $500,000 to rural and small-town departments.
Lyon Mountain Fire Department Chief Bill Durnin Jr. thanked Georgia-Pacific for the award.
"When firefighters respond to a call, the first thing I think about is their safety and if they have the right equipment to perform the job. The grant money we received from the GP mill will be used to replace outdated turnout gear that our department has been trying to replace for many years."
