TUPPER LAKE — A third big event in honor of Franklin County’s 200th birthday will be a huge parade that kicks off the annual Tupper Lake Woodsmen’s Days.
Bicentennial Committee Co-Chair and County Clerk Wanda Murtagh said the year-long celebration across the region has been a great success so far and that sponsorship of the parade will cap off the largest of the committee-sponsored events.
The parade is at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, beginning at Park Street and ending at Municipal Park.
This year’s parade theme is “Celebrating 200 Years in Franklin County.”
Crystal Boucher, executive secretary for the Woodsmen’s Days Board of Directors, said between 20 and 30 floats and marching units are expected to take part in the parade, along with 15 area bands and an assortment of heavy-equipment, emergency-services and fire-department vehicles.
Murtagh said the county will also have a historical display at the competition field and a host of bicentennial memorabilia for sale, including coffee mugs, water bottles and key chains.
Collectibles such as $20 commemorative coins, limited-edition cancelled envelopes featuring the three courthouses of Franklin County since 1808 and baseball caps with the bicentennial logo will also be for sale.
Murtagh is confident the Tupper Lake event will be as successful as the March Founders’ Day celebration and June 14 Bicentennial bash in Malone.
“I couldn’t have been more pleased with how everything all came together.”
Woodsmen’s Days events for both men and women include the log roll, axe throw, the bow saw, team cross-cut sawing and the horizontal chop.
Men-only events include tree felling and spring-board competition.
The heavy-equipment contests include loading, skidding and truck-driving skills.
The horse-pull contests Sunday are in two classes: lightweight, which is limited to 3,300 pounds; and heavyweight, which is 3,300 pounds and above.
The public can also get involved in some of the games, including men’s and women’s tug-of-war teams and the greased-pole competition on Saturday.
Both Woodsmen’s Days will feature chain-saw carving with a two-day, 10-hour competition and a quick-carve contest on Saturday.
