PLATTSBURGH — While hosting a celebration for the 1969 Post 20 American Legion state baseball champions Sunday, the Clinton County Mariners wanted to put on a good showing.

The Mariners did that with a 6-2 and 9-7 doubleheader sweep of the Champlain Edge from Vermont at Plattsburgh State's Chip Cummings Field.

"All in all, it was a great day for us and a great day for our American Legion baseball program," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "We played well in the first game, but it got a little sloppy in the heat in the second.

"We have to find a way to play two good games in a day. But, we did find a way to win both today."

In the opener, Brett Bosley rapped out three hits and Kyle Rascoe two for Clinton County in support of winning pitcher Matt Brown, who tossed a four-hitter and struck out four in going the distance.

"We finally got some run support for Brown," said Flynn. "We went 23 innings without a run for him until today. He pitched well and we played good defense behind him."

The Mariners scored a run in the third on Pat Shaughnessy's RBI single, three in the fourth with Jordan Bezio and Bosley getting RBI doubles, and two more in the fifth with Bosley adding a RBI single.

In the second game, however, the Edge tallied five runs in the third before the Mariners (10-6) were able to rally with three runs in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Clinton County didn't help itself with seven walks and six errors in the contest.

Frank Buksa paced the Mariners with three hits and four RBI, while Will Flynn, Bosley and A.J. Gordon added two hits apiece.

Buksa rapped a two-run double in the third, Flynn a RBI single, Shaughnessy a sacrifice fly and Buksa a RBI single in the fourth, and Matt Leta a RBI triple and Buksa a RBI single in the sixth.

Rascoe, who took over for starter Alex LaFountain in the sixth inning, was the winning pitcher.

The Mariners return to the diamond on Wednesday at Lefty Wilson Field against the Fourth Ward Cardinals.
