PLATTSBURGH — The Lyon Mountain Miners, following a 5-1 win in the opener, were just two outs away from a sweep of the first-place Fourth Ward Cardinals Sunday in Champlain Valley Baseball League play at Lefty Wilson Field.

But, Adam Porter's walk-off three-run homer capped a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave the Cardinals (10-3) an 8-5 victory over the Miners (7-6) for a split of their twinbill.

David Waldron tossed a three-hitter and struck out nine in going the distance for the Game 1 win.

Nick Chase rapped a two-run homer and Scott Baker a three-run double to supply the offense for Lyon Mountain.

Tory Bouyea had two of the three hits for the Cardinals, including a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning. Craig Bujold fanned six in taking the loss.

In the second game, the Miners scored two runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

But, in the bottom of the inning, Nate Durkee homered to get things going, Steve Burris singled, Nate Bilow walked, Gary Duquette walked, Jason Perry singled in two runs to tie it and Porter followed with his game-winning shot.

Perry and Burris, who went the route for the pitching win, each had two hits for the Cardinals. Gary Duquette chipped in a two-run single.

Nick Chase and Baker paced the Miners with two hits each, with Baker getting a double.

SARANAC — Mike Bergman tossed a shutout in the opener and the Meron's/Renzi's Expos jumped in front with five runs in the first inning of the second game before the Hockey Plus/Loreman's Padres rallied to gain a split.

The outcome left both teams at 9-5 on the season.

Bergman was in complete control in the first game as he struck out seven and did not walk anyone while scattering three hits. At the plate, Bergman rapped a double, scored twice and was on base three times.

Steve Criss belted a three-run homer in a four-run first inning and added a single later on. Billy Davis chipped in a double and single, and Justin Mahan, two singles.

It started out to be more of the same in the second game when the Expos took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. But, the Padres rallied to take a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the third and sealed the win on Mark Eggleston's three-run homer in the sixth.

Eggleston went four-for-four and drove in four runs in support of winning pitcher Joey Painter, who went the distance for the win.

Donny Coolidge added two singles and a double, Jeff Norton a single and double, Shane Perrotte a triple and Chris Markwica a double.

The Padres got a strong defensive game from Cory Trombley in center.

Bergman powered the Expos with two doubles, while Mike Bordeau added two singles and Criss, a double.

PLATTSBURGH — Reilly Lawless had a big day as the Fourth Ward A's picked up their first two wins of the season.

Lawless tossed a three-hit shutout and had two hits in the first game and then rapped out three hits, including two home runs, in the second contest as the A's (2-12) prevailed in 10 innings.

In the opener, Lawless allowed only three scattered singles. Tim Lafave also went the distance while pitching well in a losing cause.

Michael Howard paced the A's with three hits.

In the second contest, the A's broke a 5-all tie with five runs in the top of the 10th inning before the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx came back with three in the bottom of the inning.

Steve Livsey, who picked up the pitching win in relief, added two hits for the A's.

Jacques DeMars led the Timberjaxx with three hits, while Jim Knight Jr. and Joel Siskavich added two apiece.

One of Knight's hits was a home run.
