Crete
Why not use the Crete Center at the waterfront during the Mayor's Cup festivities? Instead of everything always being at the Turtle, why not have, like Vermont does on the waterfront, a food choo-choo with various vendors from the local area offering their food and some sort of musical events going on in the Crete all day long. You're on the lake; people can access the beach. Win-win situation.
Jobs
Send resume, that's what ads say, but the problem is the office already knows who they are going to hire without giving anyone else a chance. Sometimes the friend of a friend is not the best solution.
Drugs
I see why the Mohawks don't want Canada to arm its border — it would clog up their drug pipeline into the U.S. For years, it has been common knowledge that the majority of drugs coming into the area are being funneled through the reservation. As a resident of Altona, we all know about the drugs and weapons being smuggled in from Akwesasne. The Mohawks drive vehicles on state roads with no registration or inspections, refuse to pay land taxes while the police do nothing.
Pennies
I am appalled to learn of how some people tip waitresses. You cannot leave a pamphlet and four "pennies from heaven" for a waitress after waiting on you hand and foot. These people are trying to make a living. They make just over $3 an hour and have to make most of their living from tips. If you can't tip at least 15 percent when you go out to eat, stay home.
Auction
Since when is a county run by only three people? It seems to me that some people (Manning, Palmer, Wolfe) are trying single-handedly to make every decision for the county. And, for what it's worth, not always the right decision. Thank goodness the Board of Supervisors made the correct decision regarding who handles our auction. Why would you want to hire someone that far out of the county (Buffalo) when we have a perfectly good auctioneer right here in our own county?
Name
Here's one that may never see the light of day, or if it does, won't change anything. What's the deal with the Press-Republican's editorials? Why is there never a name signed on them? We don't know which editor is writing it. Is there a reason? Maybe they're afraid of the backlash they'd get when they make a mistake like the Saranac River Trail editorial.
Headline
Regarding June 12 local sports headline, "State track team lacks big names, but has potential," and the online headline, "Area lacks star quality in track." Seriously? Way to take a "the glass is half empty" approach here. I'm sure the Press-Republican writers could have come up with something better.
Environment
Here are five things I believe the government can do to create jobs and help the environment: drastically raise emissions standards and create a vehicle recycling program that offers a financial incentive toward the purchase of your next, more fuel-efficient vehicle; improve and increase our public transportation systems; create more and better recycling centers/programs; create more national parks and state lands; create an act that takes a very small tax ($3 to 5 per month) out of everyone's paycheck and puts it into conservation efforts. Everyone needs to do their part and pay their share in environmental restoration.
Soper
To the person who wrote in about how the trucks on Soper Road can only go so slow, huh? What? Since when did construction vehicles have a minimum speed of 60 mph? I too live on Soper Road and have seen these trucks fly by my house. There are children on this street walking and riding bikes. Driving a large vehicle is no excuse for not following the speed limit. According to you, every driver of a large vehicle can go any speed they'd like because their truck is big.
Garden
I want to thank the individual who wrote the article on June 12, in reference to the "ridiculous" Community Garden at Melissa Penfield Park. I walk my dog several times a week in the a.m. and chuckle at the thought of the woodchucks and rabbits (let alone kids) that are going to have a smorgasbord of leafy and other vegetable delights at the expense of those well-meaning individuals. People, put up a fence! This garden has to be the stupidest endeavor ever by the city. I certainly hope no taxpayers' money is being spent on this absurd project.
