Uihlein legacy to be honored with sweet tree' on Arbor Day
LAKE PLACID -- An Arbor Day celebration featuring the ceremonial planting of a special "sweet tree," along with educational displays and demonstrations is planned for Arbor Day on Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Mid's Park on Main Street in Lake Placid. The specially developed sugar maple, bred for high sap sugar content, is a product of research funded by the Uihlein Foundation and was grown at Cornell University's Uihlein Forest, where Henry and Mildred "Mid" Uihlein helped found the maple research facility back in 1965. "Mildred was a proud Garden Club member and worked hard towards the beautification and preservation of our community," said Judy Shea, a member of the Lake Placid/North Elba Tree Board of Directors. "Having a special maple tree planted in her park is only fitting, given the Uihlein's legacy in Lake Placid." The event will also celebrate winners in the children's Arbor Day poster contest, and free tree seedlings assembled by the Lake Placid Garden Club will be given to all participants.
Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the Lake Placid Business Association.
