Home gutted after Schuyler Falls fire

PLATTSBURGH — Flames were spitting out the front door when firefighters arrived at 1214 Military Turnpike Wednesday night.

They extinguished the blaze quickly, and no one was injured, though the house is considered destroyed.

“The guys did a good job knocking it down,” Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Frank Brousseau said of the fire.

His crew was dispatched to the fire around 6:20 p.m.

District 3 provided mutual aid, South Plattsburgh filled air bottles, and Cadyville firefighters stood by at the Morrisonville station.

“When we arrived, we had heavy smoke and a working fire in the kitchen area of the residence,” Brousseau said. “Flames were showing from the front door.”

The fire had been burning for a while and was extremely hot.

Firefighters put out the blaze within about 20 minutes.

“We had a pretty quick knockdown,” Brousseau said.

He wasn’t aware of any injuries and didn’t know the name of the homeowner.

A man and his adult son were there and had been living at the home, he said, though it is unclear if either of them own the residence.

A phone listing identified Cheryl, Terry and Kathy Brown as attached to 1214 Military Turnpike.

“I would say with the extent of heat and smoke damage there wasn’t much salvageable there,” Brousseau said.

The pair living at the home said they didn’t have insurance, the chief said.

Firefighters were called back to the site at 3 a.m. Thursday when someone spotted smoke coming from the home, but Brousseau said it was only steam exiting the house.
