BURKE -- A drug-sniffing dog and a license-plate check led to the arrest of two Plattsburgh men here early Saturday morning.

Nicholas S. Cabrera, 23, and Brett D. Long, 21, were each charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a class-D felony.

The two were stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on State Route 11 -- not far from the border-patrol station -- because their license plate didn't match the car, Trooper David Kunkel said Saturday afternoon.

Kunkel said agents told Malone-based troopers that a K-9 unit was called and that the dog led agents to about 4 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the Geo Prism. The drug was packaged in eight, 1-gallon zip-lock bags, he said.

Because a federal police agency can't charge state crimes, trooper's arrested the two and secured the drugs, Kunkel said.

The two were arraigned in the Town of Burke court and remanded to Franklin County Jail, each on $10,000 bail. They remained there late Saturday afternoon.
