Adirondack retreat hit hard by wind

HARRIETSTOWN -- One of the region's most exclusive properties is closed due to damage from last week's storm.

The Point, the former Great Camp to the Rockefeller family on Upper Saranac Lake, was hit by high-force winds June 11.

Photographs taken by neighbors on the ordinarily quiet Adirondack lake show two-to-three-foot waves foaming with whitecaps during the storm.

In the aftermath, ledges of rock on a jut of narrow land extending from The Point were littered with more than a dozen broken trees, great pines toppled into each other as if pushed over with great force.

Several of the property's large buildings remain partially covered in blue tarpaulins.

The exclusive resort is closed for the next several weeks, managers said, while undergoing repairs.

General Manager Mark Stebbings reported the loss of several large trees surrounding the Great Camp but characterized damage to the lodge roofs as "minor."

"We were victims to the windstorm, and as a result we lost some trees on the property," he said this week.

Property cleanup will continue through the next week or two.

Guests were at The Point during the storm, but no one was hurt.

"There were people here, yes. Everybody was just fine."

The Garrett Hotel Group sold The Point last year to Everlands, a private resort "experience" club with exclusive retreats in remote areas across the planet.

Garrett continues to manage the facility.

Everlands members join by invitation only, paying a $1 million membership fee and $40,000 in annual dues to own access to properties that include a lodge in New Zealand, a historic farmstead on Martha's Vineyard, a mountain lodge in Montana and an English countryside estate.

The global version of a country club was founded by Robert Burch, CEO of a venture capital company called Red Badge; equity club entrepreneur James Millsership; and Kenneth May, past CEO of the timeshare company Group RCI, part of Wyndham Worldwide.
