Fort Covington woman dies in accident

FORT COVINGTON — A Fort Covington woman was killed at the entrance to her driveway Monday when her husband pulled their car into the path of an oncoming truck.

Patricia A. Tuper, 72, of 67 Merrick Road was a front-seat passenger in the 2002 Cadillac Deville driven by her husband, Dayton E. Tuper, 77.

The Tupers were traveling north on Merrick Road (Franklin County Road 42) about 5:24 p.m.

As he attempted to turn into driveway of their home, Mr. Tuper pulled in front of a 2002 Dodge Dakota driven by Sherri A. Jones, 37, of Thomas Road, North Bangor, State Police said.

The truck struck the passenger side of the Tuper vehicle.

“It was obvious she was killed as a result of the collision, but an autopsy is being done today,” State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Senior Investigator Charles Bishop said Tuesday.

That examination was taking place at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone.

Mr. Tuper and Jones were also taken to Alice Hyde. He was treated and released. Jones was hurt in the crash, but Bishop did not know the extent of her injuries as of Tuesday morning.

All three were wearing seat belts.

No tickets have been issued, and the investigation is continuing.

Many people were stunned by the death of Mrs. Tuper, who was related to people in both the county’s Department of Social Services and the Buildings and Grounds Department.

“I still can’t believe it,” said County Legislature Chairman Guy “Tim” Smith (D-Fort Covington), who has known Mrs. Tuper his whole life. “She used to look after me when I was young.

“She was a very nice person and worked at Tru-Stitch for a number of years in the office.

“Everybody is still in shock,” Smith said. “I just don’t know what Dayton is going to do without her.”
