PLATTSBURGH -- A home on Cumberland Head Road was seriously damaged by fire Monday night.
Smoke poured out of broken windows at the 365 Cumberland Head Road residence as firefighters worked to knock down flames.
State Police reported that Dorothy Vance was making dinner around 8 p.m. when a grease fire started in her kitchen. Vance reportedly tried to put the fire out, but it quickly spread.
Vance, who is in a wheelchair, got herself out of the home safely. She was the only person at the large, yellow home on Lake Champlain when the fire started.
Several pets also escaped the blaze, police said.
Cumberland Head, South Plattsburgh, Beekmantown, Rescue Hose 5, District Three, Morrisonville and Cadyville fire departments responded to the fire.
A New York State Electric and Gas crew arrived at about 8:45 p.m. and cut the power to the home.
No additional information was available Monday night.
