MALONE -- A local nurse went from working at an area jail to being locked up in jail after she allegedly brought drugs to inmates.

Susan E. Hawkins usually spends her days treating inmates at the Franklin County Jail, but earlier this week she was behind bars at the jail, accused of official misconduct and promoting prison contraband.

The 53-year-old Constable woman was charged Thursday with fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, two counts of first-degree promoting prison contraband and official misconduct.

She is accused of bringing an unidentified prescription medication inside the facility and illegally giving it to inmates.

Malone-based State Police said she was arraigned on the felony and misdemeanor charges in Malone Town Court and then taken to the jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.

Jail officials said Hawkins spent the night locked up before she posted bail and was released early Friday afternoon.

Hawkins could lose her nursing license if convicted on the original charges.

She is no longer working at the facility and could not be reached for comment Friday.

Police said Hawkins is due back in court Tuesday to face the charges.
