App in production to promote Adirondacks

ALBANY — An app is in the works to promote recreational offerings in the Adirondacks.

Named a regional priority project by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council, it will include a concise inventory of places to play around the Adirondack region, to be made available through a comprehensive web portal and travel app.

It will launch at the peak of ski season in 2014, a press release said.

PARTNERSHIP

The app will be created by the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages, in partnership with the Capital Region’s Center for Economic Growth, the Mohawk Valley’s Central Adirondack Partnership for the 21st Century and the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council, covering the region officially designated for the I Love NY Tourism Campaign.

The project will directly support key aspects of the strategic plans developed by the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley and North Country Regional Economic Development Councils, contributing to investment, sustainability and revitalization within those regions. 

Funding comes from a Regional Economic Development Council Market NY grant from Empire State Development and the Center for Economic Growth.

“This project symbolizes the great strides our state has made in cross-regional collaboration,” said F. Michael Tucker, president and CEO of the Center for Economic Growth. 

“Members of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Economic Development Councils from the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley and North Country were eager to partner on this project as a means to leverage the park’s recreational assets to promote economic development.”

 EXTENSIVE DATA

The project’s main goals are to provide a format for Adirondack Park communities to connect their recreation, lodging, dining and other assets to a large audience, “while providing the user a fantastic experience that inspires travel to the Adirondacks and acts as a resource while visiting,” the release said.

The web portal will be accessible via a platform on the adaptive website, Adirondack Regional Tourism Council’s VisitAdirondacks.com. The Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages’ enhanced recreation app will be available for download on Android and iPhone. 

Lake Placid-based digital marketing agency Adworkshop is overseeing the extensive data collection and mapping, development and design on behalf of the partnering organizations.

While visiting the region, a traveler be able to use the app — even if data and WiFi are unavailable — to find lodging, dining, attractions and other information near their current location.

“When complete, the Adirondack Park Recreation Web Portal will provide easily accessible trip-planning data for residents inside and outside the park, promoting the Adirondacks as an unparalleled recreation destination and bringing exposure to lesser-known assets in the park,” said Saranac Lake native Kimberly Finnigan, the project manager and attorney at Cooper Erving & Savage LLP.
