Higgins powers Peru past Saranac Lake in volleyball

PERU — Taylor Higgins accounted for seven points, four aces and eight kills to help power Peru to a 3-0 sweep of Saranac Lake in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference volleyball Thursday.

The Indians won by game scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-16.

Lea Perry added eight points, five aces and nine assists for Peru, while Maddie Kaplan finished with eight points, five aces, six kills and three digs. Megan Kelso had six points, two aces and five assists.

Brittany Woodruff paced Saranac Lake with five points, three aces and five digs, and Samantha Marting added three points, three aces and four digs.

PLATTSBURGH — Deanna LaBarge finished with 12 kills and 12 points, Victoria Herkalo 14 points, Kianna Dragoon 20 assists, Jamie Bedard seven digs and six points, and Amanda McMahon four kills and nine digs for the Hornets.

Plattsburgh prevailed by game scores of 25-10, 28-26, 25-20.

“Jamie Bedard played well on defense and came up with some great digs to keep us alive,” Plattsburgh coach Shae LaPorte said. “Herkalo’s serve was consistent, and we relied on her to tally up the points. And LaBarge had a good all-around match.”

ELLENBURG — Zoey Varin served 10 points and four aces and slammed down seven kills to lead the Bobcats to a victory in three games.

MacKenzie Fountain added eight assists for Northern Adirondack, and Olivia Barnaby had six points and five digs. Aubrey Kerr, Taylor Pitts and Amber Collins all had five points.

“NAC definitely played well as a team,” Bobcats coach Katrina Castine said. “Communication was key — and staying positive.”
