Lions auction

TO THE EDITOR: The Plattsburgh Lions Club held its 55th-annual auction on Nov. 9 at the West Side Ballroom.

The dinner event raised approximately $11,000, which will be used in accordance with the Lions mission: “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.”

On behalf of our club, I wish to express our deep appreciation to all those who attended the festivities; to our local businesses and merchants who donated their expert services, quality auction merchandise or gifts of cash; to Facility Manager Bill Dashnaw and his wonderful staff at West Side Ballroom; and to our club members and volunteers.

Donating their valuable time and talented services were local musician Roy Hurd, the Press-Republican, Industrial Press Printing Co., Steve Martin of Martin & Sons Auction Sales, Rolla Parker of Parker Chevrolet and Tom Weiskotten.

Our generous table sponsors included the Beekmantown Lions Club, Brown Funeral Home, Champlain National Bank, the Della Group, Dick’s Customizing and Service, High Peaks Dental, Humana Insurance, Kline Family Dentistry, Knight Automotive Sales & Service, Lee Appliance, Smithfield Liquor & Wine and the Spectacle Shoppe.

A special thanks to our non-member volunteers: Matt Reardon, Andy Clark and Bob Walker.

Finally, I extend a heartfelt thank-you to Lion Tammy Tyler for her calming leadership as chairperson of this important club event.

We had a fun time and look forward to doing it again next year.

Connecticut shooting

TO THE EDITOR: Once again, this country has had a tragedy. And, this one just a little over a week away from Christmas.

I’m talking about the horrific shooting on Friday, Dec. 14, in Connecticut where 20 young children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed. Most of us just want to know the answer to one question that will never be answered: Why?
