fDi (foreign direct investment) magazine is a publication of the London-based Financial Times. Rankings are released every two years in five population categories, with micropolitan cities described as those with 100,000 people or fewer.

North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas said the ranking is especially significant and gratifying as it looks for signs and trends identifying cities of the future.

The purpose is to identify where international investors and businesses should be looking, he said.

“It is truly extraordinary to be compared with like-sized areas all over the western hemisphere and be branded as No. 4 for economic potential, backed up with a Top 10 placement for the quality of our workforce and human resources,” Douglas said in a press release.

Plattsburgh Mayor Donald Kasprzak said the recognition is a great honor for Plattsburgh and the North Country.

“This is the result of solid efforts by Garry Douglas and his Chamber of Commerce staff as well as business and government partnerships working together,” he said by email. “We all should be very proud of this recognition.”

The economic-potential rankings are based on population forecasts, gross domestic product, total inward and outward foreign direct investment, the number of new projects and jobs and more.

Douglas said it demonstrates that regional economic and workforce development strategies are correct and have received attention.

“This year’s ranking follows on No. 3 ranking two years ago, reinforcing to the world that there is a place in North America called Plattsburgh that they need to find out about and pay attention to,” he said.

“This is an enormously valuable message in support of all of our economic-development strategies and endeavors. And, it’s no coincidence that neighboring Montreal ranked fourth among major cities, continuing to provide a powerful economic dynamic for Plattsburgh and the North Country to work with and draw from.”
