Helen M. Richards

ELIZABETHTOWN — Helen M. Richards, 95, of Wadhams Road in Elizabethtown, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Essex Center in Elizabethtown.

She was born in Elizabethtown on Oct. 10, 1918, to the late Harry and Alice (Dougan) MacDougal.

Helen graduated from Plattsburgh Normal School in 1938. She was a teacher in the Elizabethtown School District for a number of years. Helen and her late husband, Howard G. Richards owned and operated the Richards Insurance Agency in Elizabethtown for many years. She was an active member of United Church of Christ, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Elizabethtown-Westport Garden Club, Essex County Insurance Women's Club and volunteered for a number of community organizations.

Helen is survived by two sons, Harry Richards and his wife Danuta of Lee, N.H., David Richards and his wife Ruth Inie of Phoenixville, Pa.; four grandchildren, Christopher Richards and his wife Sarah of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Jessica Richards of Milton, Mass., Kate Inie-Richards of Phoenixville, Pa., Claire Inie-Richards of Cardiff, Wales; one great-grandson Ezra Sherman-Richards; a niece, Janet Cross and her husband Steve of Elizabethtown and their families.

She is predeceased by her husband Howard G. Richards; a brother and sister-in-law, Allister and Edna MacDougal; and a sister, Arline MacDougal.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 4, at W.M. Marvin's Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. The Order of the Eastern Star will have a prayer service at 3:30. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 5, from United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Elizabethtown.
