Cannons thump 'flat' Mariners

COLCHESTER, Vt. — This wasn’t exactly the tune-up the Clinton County Senior Mariners were hoping for on Thursday.

The Colchester Cannons, playing their first game of the season, scored seven runs in the fourth inning and rolled to a 14-1 victory.

The Mariners (4-2), who will host the Brian Mehan Wooden Bat Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, trailed 2-1 after three innings before the Cannons broke loose for seven in the fourth and four more in the fifth.

“We didn’t have enough players mentally prepared to play,” Mariners coach Matt Tolosky said. “From the first inning on, we were flat and failed to execute. We missed some signs early on, and I believe that set the tempo for the game.

“Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call for us.”

Zachary Tandy, the first of four Colchester pitchers, picked up the win. Brandon Arel led the Cannons offensively with three hits, while Tandy added a double and a single. Cody Sharrow homered.

Six players had a single for the Mariners, with Logan Recor driving in the lone run with a fielder’s choice.

“Colchester played a solid, sound game,” Tolosky said. “We hadn’t played since Sunday, and it showed.”

Ryan Meyer, with Marcus Lefebvre in relief in the fourth, took the loss.

“Ryan and Marcus both threw the ball well,” Tolosky said. “But we weren’t able to build adequate momentum offensively.”
