Sweets in store on maple weekends

PLATTSBURGH — Jamie Rogers looks forward to Maple Weekend because of the visitors who come to Heaven Hill Farm to learn about making maple products.

Rogers, who oversees the sugaring operations at the nonprofit Lake Placid farm, said this is the first year they have publicly advertised participation in Maple Weekend.

They last took part three years ago, when 150 people showed up, he said.


The New York State Maple Producers Association’s annual Maple Weekend is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday and also next, March 23 and 24.

Sugar houses around the state invite the public to see their operations, sample their products and offer other activities, such as horse-drawn wagon rides and hands-on experience making syrup.

The Adirondack Region produces a third of New York state’s maple syrup, according to an association press release.

Rogers said Heaven Hill Farm benefits most by reaching out to the community through the event, as they get a chance to teach people about the process of making maple products.

This year, they will participate for two Saturdays rather than on Sundays, he said.


At Brow’s Sugarhouse in West Chazy, owned by Wayne Brow and his son, Mark, visitors can enjoy samples of maple products and tours.

Wayne said the turnout for Maple Weekend is always good, and it benefits the business because people who try their samples can turn into customers.

Bill Wood, owner of Woods Maple Products, said that when the weather is cold, he does not get a large turnout for Maple Weekend; more tend to turn out when the weather is favorable.

The forecast for this weekend is for temperatures in the 30s and partly sunny skies.

“Hopefully, people will come to our operation, which I am very proud of,” Wood said.
