Men charged with burglaries in Rouses Point, Plattsburgh

ROUSES POINT — Police say they’ve solved some burglary cases in Rouses Point and Plattsburgh — and that’s a relief to victims.

“(The burglar) broke in the back door and rifled through the whole shop until he found my safe, which was hidden,” said Lisa Maskell, co-owner of the Hair Hut in Rouses Point.

She said a hammer and two screwdrivers, all of which belong to her, were used to break off the safe’s door, and then the thief made off with the cash inside.

State Police say Joseph M. Barchard, 31, of Rouses Point burgled the Hair Hut and two other places in the village: St. Patrick’s Church and Chazy Hardware.

SEARCH WARRANT

State Police posted surveillance photos from Chazy Hardware on its Facebook page, State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said.

That brought in anonymous tips to Chazy-based investigators and led to a search warrant being executed for Barchard’s residence, she said.

Evidence from the burglaries was found at the home, police said.

And Fleishman said Barchard was also found to be in possession of drugs.

Barchard was charged with three counts of third-degree burglary, a felony; two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor; and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, also a misdemeanor.

PLATTSBURGH BURGLARIES

In the City of Plattsburgh, Terry Whitaker was arrested on Wednesday in connection with some burglaries in a string of crimes under investigation there.

The Plattsburgh man, 43, allegedly stole over $400 in coins and currency from the Washing Well laundry service at 31 McKinley Ave. and more than $5,000 in cash from the safe at Latitude 44 Bistro on U.S. Avenue.

City Police had asked media to publicize a surveillance-camera photo of a man taken at Latitude 44 Bistro earlier this week after a break-in there and theft of a safe.
