Arthur John "Art" Ryan

MERRILL — Arthur John "Art" Ryan, 83, of Light Post Way, Merrill, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone. Born in Chateaugay on May 23, 1930, he was the son of William T. and Ella (Burke) Ryan. He was married to Barbara Bird on June 26, 1954, in St. Peter's Church, Plattsburgh.

Mr. Ryan graduated from Chateaugay High School and from Plattsburgh State in May 1954. He was employed as a teacher at Ellenburg Central/Northern Adirondack Central School for 31 years. He worked many summers for U.S. Customs in the Champlain, Chateaugay, Trout River and Churubusco ports. Mr. Ryan was a member of the Moon Valley Ski Patrol, Titus Mountain 70 Plus Club, Hemingford Golf Club, Malone Golf Club, Trout River Golf Club, Figure 8 Mountain Hunting Club, Figure 8 Pond Hunting Club, Elks Club in Malone and Kiwanis in Ellenburg, where he was the secretary. He was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church, Lyon Mountain. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, music and flying; even building his own Ultra Light plane.

Mr. Ryan is survived by his wife of 58 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Robin Cook of Chateaugay, Theresa and Shawn Dwyer of Cornwall, Ontario; a son, William T. Ryan of Plattsburgh; five grandchildren, Erica Cook, Christopher (Heather) Cook, Patrick Cook, Katherine (Ian) Dwyer, Cory Dwyer; a great-grandson, Cooper J. Cook; a sister, Lucille Hinds of Mountain View; a sister-in-law, Shirley Ryan of Chateaugay Lake; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, H. Paul Ryan.

There are no calling hours. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 24, in St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Ted Crosby of St. Bernard's Church officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at Brainardsville Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Lyon Mountain American Legion.
