John Jackson McCaffrey

---- — ALTO, GA/ROUSES POINT — John Jackson McCaffrey, age 70, of Alto, Ga., formerly of Rouses Point died June 12, 2013, of diabetes while under hospice care in Gainesville, Ga.

He was the son of John McCaffrey and Eileen Jackson McCaffrey and was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Oct. 14, 1942. John graduated from Champlain Central School in 1961 and from Plattsburgh State in 1966 with a Bachelors degree in Education. He taught in local schools for a number of years after graduating.

He then spent the next three years in the U.S. Army (13 months in Vietnam) being discharged as a 1st Lt. While in Vietnam John was awarded two bronze stars for courage under fire. After his discharge he owned and operated Whiskey Reds in Farmingdale, Long Island for many years. John was an accomplished guitarist and played in a number of bands in Long Island and in the North Country.

John was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Kay McCaffrey Brown; a brother, Michael McCaffrey and a nephew Patrick McCaffrey.

John is survived by a sister, Mary McCaffrey of Huntersville, N.C.; and a brother, Paul McCaffrey of Peru, N.Y.; three nephews, Connor and Tara McCaffrey and Kaden, John and Shelly McCaffrey and Summer, Daniel and Julie McCaffrey; also cousins, Judy Gates of Plattsburgh, N.Y., John Pat Landry of Jacksonville, Fla., and former wife Maureen Allen. John also leaves behind many friends in the North Country.

The family wishes to thank the staff from 53D of Northeast Georgia Medical and they are especially grateful to caregivers Haley Griggs and Judy Dollins of Lula, Georgia.

There will be no calling hours or service. A celebration of Johns life will be held at a later date in Rouses Point, N.Y.
