KEESEVILLE — Stewart’s Shops plans to build a new store in Keeseville.
Stewart’s real-estate representative Charles Marshall said the new store will be constructed on the recently acquired Wilson Farms property at 1774 Main St.
“We would like to start site work in mid-July,” he said.
The main reason for the acquisition was to once again be able to sell gasoline in the Keeseville market.
Stewart’s is already operating the former Wilson Farms location, as well as the Stewart’s Shop located at 1735 Main St.
Marshall said both of those stores would be open during construction, then will close once the new Stewart’s opens.
The Wilson Farms building doesn’t meet Stewart’s purposes, he said.
The new store, to be built on the north side of the property, will be almost 3,400 square feet. The property allows more room for traffic to maneuver and park, Marshall said.
The Keeseville Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a meeting for site-plan review of the project at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Village Board room, 58 Liberty St., Keeseville.
The meeting is open to the public.
The Keeseville property is one of five former Wilson Farms or Sugarcreek properties recently purchased by Stewart’s, including a former Wilson Farms in Lake Placid.
CSPnet.com reported recently that Stewart’s planned to remodel or rebuild at all five of those locations, but on Thursday, the Press-Republican was unable to verify plans for Lake Placid.
According to the company website, Saratoga Springs-based Stewart’s has 324 stores in Upstate New York and Vermont. It has approximately 4,000 employees.
Stewart’s had more than $1 billion in annual sales last year. The company recorded more than $50 million in profits and contributed almost $15 million to its employee profit-sharing plan last year.
The Dake family owns two-thirds of the company, and employees own the other one-third.
Stewart’s donated $2.25 million to charity in 2013.
The company uses milk from dairy farms in Saratoga, Washington and Rensselaer counties.
Milk, juice and tea are processed at Stewart’s 226,000-square-foot facility in Greenfield, which is also where ice cream, soups, chili and other Stewart’s-brand foods are made.
