Press-Republican honored

---- — ALBANY — The Press-Republican has four awards in the 2011-12 New York Publishers Association contest.

The annual contest gives only first-place awards, so entries are deemed the best in the state in their circulation category.

Veteran reporters Kim Smith Dedam and Lohr McKinstry were honored in the Breaking News Coverage category for “Man rescued from submerged tractor-trailer,” coverage of a harrowing brush with death.

In the dark of night on Aug. 7, 2012, off-duty State Department of Environmental Conservation Officer Steve Stubing heard a horn blasting and took his boat across Eagle Lake in Ticonderoga to find a tractor-trailer overturned and almost submerged.

Driver Michael J. Rodriguez of Broadalbin was trapped in the cab with just his nose and chin above water. Stubing summoned help, rescuers from Chilton and Ticonderoga fire departments were able to free the driver even as the truck slid deeper into the water.

Staff Photographer Kelli Catana and Staff Writer Ashleigh Livingston, who covers education, received the award for Multi-Media Presentation for their feature story and video “Local kids give advice on love, marriage.”

The multi-media package, which appeared on Valentine’s Day in 2012, featured interviews with Momot Elementary School students that showed their innocence, humor and surprising wisdom.

Catana and Livingston also won an Associated Press award for this feature.

Photographer Rob Fountain was cited in the Sports Photography category for “Chazy girls celebrate,” a November 2011 photo that captured an emotional soccer player as she and a teammate talked about the challenges their team faced on their way to a state championship.

An award for Page Design went to former Night Editor Dan Begnoche for “Change of Scenery,” a Spectrum cover that appeared in the Feb. 26, 2012, newspaper.

Begnoche set up scenic pictures so they appeared on the page like photographs scattered on a desk, with the captions written like handwritten sticky notes and a paper clip in the upper corner.

Catana and Livingston attended the Excellence Awards Reception on Wednesday night at the State Room in Albany to accept the awards for the Press-Republican newsroom.
