PLATTSBURGH — Three Section VII champions will be crowned tonight in girls’ basketball at the Plattsburgh State Field House.
Peru, the lone Class A representative in Section VII, has already captured the Class A championship and will meet the Section II representative on March 7 at Onondaga Community College in the first round of the NYSPHSAA.
Tonight three more girls’ basketball teams will join the Indians as Section VII champions.
Beekmantown vs. Saranac, 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles were rolling through the Northern Basketball League’s Division I during the regular season, picking up 17 wins and no losses.
But in their final game of the regular season, the Chiefs handed Beekmantown its first loss of the season 48-42.
Earlier in the season, the Eagles defeated Saranac 67-49.
Tonight will be the rubber match, and it will determine the Section VII Class B champion.
Beekmantown has been led all season long by talented center Shannon Ryan, who led the NBL in scoring with 24.6 points per game. Her inside partner, Emily Anderson, has been adding 9.8 points per game.
Freshman Kenna Guynup has come on late with an average of 9.8 points per game, including a season-high 24 points against AuSable Valley in an overtime victory. She has also knocked down 23 3-pointers, while Grace Kelly has chipped in with 15.
The Chiefs have been led by guards Kayla Napper and Tori Trim. Napper leads the team with an average of 12.3 points per game, while Trim is right behind with an 11.8 points-per-game average.
Summer Gillespie (9.7) and Kaitlyn Bowman (9.4) give Saranac four capable scorers.
Trim leads the NBL with 40 3-pointers on the season. Napper has added 11, and Emma Newell has connected on nine.
