Payne named Division III Upstate Player of the Week

CENTERVILLE, Mass. — The ECAC became the second agency in as many days to recognize Plattsburgh State women’s basketball senior Kathleen Payne when it named her its Division III Upstate Player of the Week.

It’s the second time this season the ECAC has honored the 5-foot-9-inch guard/forward, who led the Cardinals to their first SUNY Athletic Conference regular-season championship Saturday.

Through the Cardinals’ final trio of regular-season games last week, Payne averaged 25.3 points and 10.3 rebounds to help Plattsburgh reach 20 wins in a season for the first time in program history.

After a 28-point, 10-rebound outing at Potsdam, Payne collected a game-high 24 points against Fredonia. In the process, she broke her own single-season scoring record of 476 points, which was set during her sophomore season. She tallied game-highs in points (24) and rebounds (14) against Buffalo State.

By grabbing her seventh rebound of the game, the senior became the Cardinals’ all-time leading rebounder. Additionally, Payne upped her single-season point total to 501 to become the first Plattsburgh women’s basketball player and ninth basketball player of any gender at the institution to score at least 500 points in a single season.
