WESTPORT — The 34th-Annual Dr. Thomas Tanneberger Memorial Alumni Basketball Tournament netted approximately $1,200. with the money raised going to a scholarship fund.
Since his accidental death in 1979 at age 30, the memorial basketball and golf Tournaments have been held annually in remembrance of Dr. Thomas Tanneberger, who was a veterinarian in Westport. Tanneberger excelled in academics as well as athletics at Westport.
Each year a Westport Central School graduating senior who has demonstrated academic and athletic excellence is awarded a $2,000 4-year scholarship in Tanneberger’s name. In addition, an alternate receives a $250 award.
The tournament featured four men’s and two women’s teams as well as two Biddy basketball games for third- and fourth-graders as well as fifth- and sixth-graders. A foul-shooting competition for junior-high students and a three-point competition rounded out the athletic events. In addition, there was a firemen’s spaghetti dinner.
