The Section VII-X Class C and D football playoffs begin tonight, with another Class C semifinal set for Saturday.
When Tupper Lake and Ticonderoga met in the regular season two weeks ago, the game was decided on a last-second touchdown. The Sentinels will host the Lumberjacks again tonight, and this time the winner advances to the Class D title game at top-seeded Moriah.
Tupper Lake (3-4) is coming off a 28-0 win over St. Lawrence. Zach Meade directs the offense — he has thrown for 783 yards and eight touchdowns. His favorite targets are Matt Dechene and Hayden LaMere, who have a combined 44 catches.
Ticonderoga (4-4) beat the Lumberjacks Oct. 16 when Robert Kearns threw his only touchdown pass of the season with two seconds left. Kearns didn't play last week in a lopsided loss to Saranac Lake, and rushing leader Bryant Austin is no longer with the team.
No. 1 seed Ogdensburg hosts No. 4 Gouverneur in a Class C semifinal tonight. The Blue Devils (7-1) have won their last six, with their only loss coming against nonconference Whitney Point. They've scored more than 40 points in five of their eight games, and quarterback Jared Morrow is one of just two quarterbacks in the Northern Football Conference with more than 1,000 passing yards this season.
Gouverneur (3-5) visited Ogdensburg Oct. 16 and lost 47-12. The Wildcats feature running back Zach Cummings, who leads the conference in rushing yards and has carried into the end zone eight times.
In Saturday's Class C action, No. 2 Saranac Lake hosts No. 3 Saranac. The Red Storm (6-1) have the stingiest defense in the NFC and the second-best scoring offense, both of which they displayed in a 54-0 early-season win over the Chiefs. They finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak.
Saranac (4-3) has won its last two. The Chiefs' biggest offensive threats are Dylan Everleth, who has rushed for six touchdowns and caught five scoring passes, and Ben Weightman, who has thrown for 709 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Class B championship game (Peru at Beekmantown) and the Class A semifinals (Potsdam at Massena) are both slated for Monday night.
Plattsburgh High (2-6) hosts rival Seton Catholic (0-7) in a crossover game tonight, and AuSable Valley (0-8) hosts St. Lawrence (2-6).
