---- — Essex Farm to be open for visitors Saturday

ESSEX — Essex Farm is hosting a Celebrate Summer farm tour on Saturday, Aug 11. The tour leaves from the barnyard at 10 a.m. and will cover the vegetable fields, pasture and livestock areas.

“Mid-summer is a wonderful time of year to see a highly diversified farm in full production,” said owner Kristin Kimball.

Participants should come prepared to walk long distances over rough ground. After lunch, there will be an optional high-energy work party. Kristin Kimball will also sign copies of “The Dirty Life,” her 2010 memoir about the farm’s start-up year.

Essex Farm is a 500-acre, draft-horse-powered farm. The Kimballs offer a full-diet, year-round, free-choice membership, including milk, meats, vegetables, fruits and grains. Essex Farm is located at 2503 NYS Route 22 in Essex, one mile from the Essex-Charlotte ferry. A suggested donation is $25 for adults, $10 for full-time farmers and students and $5 for children.

Summer tour to be held at area vineyards

PLATTSBURGH — The Third Annual Lake Champlain Wines Summer Wine Tour will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12. Five wineries and one cidery, all located in Clinton County, will be participating. Vineyard and winery tours and tastings will be available at each location, and a drawing for a basket of cheer will be held.

To participate, a commemorative Lake Champlain Wines wine glass and a ticket must be purchased. Sales are limited and are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Glasses and tickets can be purchased at any of the six locations listed below.

The pre-event cost is $10 and the day-of-event cost is $12. Participants must be 21 years old or older. Designated drivers are encouraged and will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a prize.

The tour helps bring awareness to the Champlain Valley’s growing wine industry. The formation of the Adirondack Coast Wine Trail has encouraged agri-tourism and economic growth. For more information, contact any of the wineries and cidery listed below:
