CHAZY — The New York State Department of Labor’s Agriculture Labor Program will be hosting a Post-Harvest Meeting for the North Country on Monday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. until noon at The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute, 1034 Miner Farm Road, Chazy.

There are seven such meetings planned throughout the state. These meetings are intended for all growers and producers of agricultural products who have employees of any category (domestic or foreign, seasonal or year round) or think they might hire workers next year.
Agriculture Labor Program supervisory staff as well as field staff will be present at each meeting. They will be discussing their observations on the 2012 season and share their outlook and plans for 2013. They will also provide some information about the new electronic application for the H-2A guest-worker program. Most importantly, they will be seeking input from agriculture producers about their experience in 2012 and what they anticipate for 2013.
The Agriculture Labor Program exists to promote the success of New York’s large and diverse agriculture industry.
Sustainable foods winter conference set
SARATOGA — More than 1,300 sustainable-farm and food experts and members of the public will exchange knowledge and help shape the future of New York State’s organic movement as the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) holds its 2013 NOFA-NY Winter Conference in Saratoga Springs from Jan. 25-27, 2013.
The conference, the premier sustainable farming educational event in New York State, will explore topics including urban food production, GMO labeling, farming with alternative energy sources, and improvements in organic farming practices from grains to apples to livestock during three days at the Saratoga Hilton & City Center.
Members of the public, including consumers interested in food and farming issues, gardeners, farmers, policy makers, restaurant owners, and social service agency leaders are encouraged to attend, with registration packages available for partial days as well as the entire event. Early bird discounts are available through Dec. 11.
“The 2013 Winter Conference will focus on the resilience demonstrated and needed by the state’s organic farmers in the face of economic and environmental upheaval. From recovering from the crop devastation experienced from recent hurricanes and droughts, to the challenges of continuing to farm when land can easily be sold to developers or for natural gas, this conference will focus on how our organic farmers demonstrate resilience every day,” said Kate Mendenhall, executive director of NOFA-NY.
To help make this event more affordable for farmers, NOFA-NY will offer scholarships to beginning and experienced farmers. Child care is available for children 3 to 5 years old, and a children’s conference with special activities for young people is open for ages 6 to 13.
Beef winter feed program rescheduled
PLATTSBURGH — The Northern New York Winter Feed Management Program for beef producers postponed by Hurricane Sandy impacts downstate has been reset for Tuesday.
The impact of all types of weather on feed crops will be part of the discussion broadcast by teleconference link among the Cornell Cooperative Extension offices in Canton, Malone, Plattsburgh, Watertown and Westport. The program begins at 6:30 p.m.
Due to weather-related crop losses in 2012, farmers may need to consider buying feed this year or consider selling stock. CCE Livestock Educators Ron Kuck and Betsy Hodge will talk about the merits of keeping feeder stock or selling them now, how to buy feed if needed, and how to improve storage to improve feeding efficiency.
Cornell University Beef Extension Specialist Dr. Michael J. Baker will provide information on feeder cattle grading and a price survey update and answer producers’ questions.
The program will help farmers take a feed inventory and estimate how much feed they will need through the 2012-2013 winter. Farmers are encouraged to bring information on the types of feed, number of bales, and other feeding program details to the meeting.
