Business acquisition

MALONE — Chateaugay Funeral Home has purchased the St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home of Malone. The business will be re-named St. Mary-Murphy-Wilcox Funeral Home.

F. Thomas “Tom” St. Mary has been licensed for 42 years and has owned and operated St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home Inc. for 37 years. Tom and his wife, Connie, are looking forward to semi-retirement in order to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. He will continue to help with the business.

Hubert “Bert” Wilcox has been in funeral service for more than 37 years. He graduated from Canton ATC and worked for Martin J. Nunn Funeral Home in Rome, N.Y., until he moved back home to Brainardsville in 1978. He worked for several area funeral homes during this time providing professional services until he became employed full time as a funeral director with St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home in 1980. In 1995, he purchased the Chateaugay Funeral Home and continued to assist Tom St. Mary.

Emily Wilcox Hanley, Bert Wilcox’s daughter, will assume the licensed manager position of St. Mary-Murphy-Wilcox Funeral Home. She graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and SUNY Canton with an associates degree in Mortuary Science. She became a licensed funeral director in 2003. She has assisted her father at Chateaugay Funeral Home since graduation. Emily and her husband, Kyle, reside in Brainardsville.

Chateaugay Funeral Home and St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home Inc. have served the families of the local communities for more than 100 years with dedicated and professional service. Both funeral homes will remain dedicated to professional and personal service, helping families at a very difficult time.
