LAKE PLACID — Engel & Völkers Lake Placid has named Donna Puckhaber, Robert (Bob) Maswick, Dylan Duffy and Susan Babcock to its shop as New York state licensed real-estate professionals dedicated to serving the specialized, residential and commercial property market within the Adirondack Region.
Prior to joining Engel & Völkers, Puckhaber, sales agent, worked for years in the Lake Placid hospitality industry. Maswick, associate broker, has been in the real-estate business in the Capital District Region since 2002, listing and selling both commercial and residential real estate. Duffy, sales agent, recently graduated from SUNY Oswego and has chosen to come back to his hometown of Lake Placid. Babcock, sales agent, was born and raised in Lake Placid and brings extensive knowledge of Lake Placid and the Adirondack region.

PLATTSBURGH — The Board of Directors of Behavioral Health Services North has recently inducted four new board members, Matt Nolan, Alexa King, Kirsten Pope and Joseph Wawrzynski.
Craig Amoth, president and CEO of BHSN, said that the board’s capacity to serve the agency and community has been expanded again.
“We are in a growth phase of our governance and are pleased to add Kirsten, Alexa, Matt and Joseph to our team,” he said,
Nolan is chief operating officer of the Elizabethtown Community Hospital and lives in Peru. His previous experience was with Bristol-Myers Squibb and Wyeth Pharmeceuticals.
King works for Cornell Cooperative Extension as a team coordintor for 4-H Youth Development and Nutrition, specifically the Eat Smart New York program. Receiving her MBA from Penn State, King is a strong leader in strategic planning and change management.
Pope serves as the director of internal audit, corporate compliance officer, at CVPH Medical Center having served as its internal auditor prior to that. She also serves on the Board of Directors for The Strand.
Wawrzyncki is the administrative director of Laboratory Services at CVPH and held a similar position at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. His experience with LEAN and Six Sigma strategies will guide the board as it focuses on a new strategic plan in the coming year.
PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, continued its outreach to the group travel market by attending the American Bus Association Marketplace for the seventh year in Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 11 to 15.
More than 3,200 buyers and suppliers were in attendance, including Kristy Kennedy, director of the bureau; Tanya Brand, Warren County group tour promoter; Allison Kaupellis, sales and marketing director of Best Western Ticonderoga; and various New York State tourism representatives.
ABA Marketplace is a way to connect with tour operators. While at the show, representatives from the Adirondack Region conducted more than 100 one-on-one meetings with tour operators designed to discuss what the Adirondack Coast has to offer the group market and how it can help increase the operator’s tour portfolio.
Topics highlighted by Kennedy this year included the Adirondack Coast Wine Trail, the Battle of Plattsburgh Bicentennial and the newly established Peace Garden at the Kent-Delord House Museum as part of the War of 1812 International Peace Garden Trail.
Group travel is a vital part of the bureau’s marketing efforts. Studies show motorcoach-based tourism generates as many as 1,389,670 jobs in communities across the United States, paying almost $55.7 billion in wages and benefits. On average, one bus tour spends $3,493 in the local community on an overnight trip not including individual spending.

TICONDEROGA — CV-TEC and OneWorkSource in coordination with area organizations will hold a session of the Work Readiness Credential and the National Retail Federation Customer Service Credential courses at North Country Community College starting in February.
The courses will take place on Fridays beginning on Feb. 28 and running through April 4. Courses will be held at North Country Community College in Ticonderoga from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The NCCC Ticonderoga Campus is located at 11 Hawkeye Trail in Ticonderoga.
The certification testing following the session will take place on April 11. An employment seminar organized by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce with Ticonderoga area employers will be held as part of the course the week after the testing. An employment seminar was held for the first round of courses and a number of area employers were involved offering initial interviews to participants.
Employers included Inter-Lakes Health, Silver Bay YMCA, Mt. Lake Services, Best Western Plus Ticonderoga Inn & Suites, The Burgoyne Grill, Wal-Mart and Champlain Valley Heating & Plumbing. In addition, North Country Community College participated in providing information on further educational opportunities. The employment seminars are organized and coordinated by the chamber.
More than fifty percent of the participants did obtain employment and additional participants are currently interviewing for positions.
One of the key benefits to employers is the candidate-assessment element. Before sitting for the course, each candidate is assessed for baseline math, reading comprehension, and problem-solving skills. Employees not meeting the baseline standards are referred to remedial resources prior to taking the course. This helps employers assess and prepare more marginal employees to be much more successful over time.
The nationally recognized course has proven to be valuable to employers in reducing hiring costs and employee turnover. Ticonderoga-area employers are invited to register their employees for the courses. Registrants may qualify for free tuition. PLATTSBURGH — Applications are now available for Dannemora Federal Credit Union’s scholarship program.
DFCU will award $10,000 in scholarships to 10 area students for the 2013-14 academic school years. Each student will be eligible to receive $250 a year for four years, for a total of $1,000. Scholarship applications will be judged based upon scholastic achievements, citizenship, personality, leadership, perseverance, character and resourcefulness.
Applicants must be students in the senior graduating class of a high school who are a current member or whose parent/guardian are a member of DFCU. Applicants must also attend an accredited institution of higher education in fall 2014. Scholarships will be renewed for the second, third and fourth year of college if the recipient maintains a GPA of 2.50.
The program has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to local students since 1993. Last year’s recipients included students from Northern Adirondack Jr./Sr. High School, Peru High School, Saranac High School, Beekmantown High School, Northeastern Clinton Central School and Plattsburgh High School.
