Awards received

PLATTSBURGH — Mountain Lake PBS has captured two awards for Excellence in Production and Community Engagement. The awards were handed out at the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) 50th annual Executive Conference held at The Sagamore Resort Hotel.

A collaborative program between Mountain Lake and the Plattsburgh Public Library designed to encourage young children and their parents to become interested in science and the language of problem solving has earned an NYSBA Community Engagement Award.

Through the free initiative, which featured Mountain Lake PBS' "Sid the Science Kid," more than 100 parents and their children viewed an episode of the show that focused on growing things and reading an interactive story. They then participated in numerous science- and literacy-focused activities and projects. Children also took their projects home and received a free book to practice their literacy skills.

"This outreach program to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics is a perfect example of how local stations can work with the community to help educate tomorrow's leaders," said NYSBA President David Donovan, noting that the association launched the Community Engagement Awards to recognize the critical relationship between local stations and organizations that work to improve their communities.

Celebrating the visual and performing arts, Art Express, produced, written and edited by Paul Larson, was awarded Outstanding Locally Produced TV Show. The program features people in the Mountain Lake PBS region, such as a Montreal-area sculptor who deals with the pain of a family loss through her work. It also highlights talented people of international significance who inhabit the PBS landscape, such as violin virtuoso Joshua Bell.
