WILLSBORO — At its meeting March 1, the Board of Directors of Champlain National Bank elected Peter S. Paine III as a vice chairman of the board and a member of the Executive Committee. In addition to his new responsibilities, Paine will continue to serve on the Audit and Asset-Liability Sub-Committees of the board.
Paine graduated from Princeton University and holds law degrees from Oxford University and Vanderbilt Law School. He practiced law for six years with the law firm of Drinker, Biddle and Reath in Philadelphia and for the past 15 years has been a management consultant with several firms including McKinsey & Co., primarily serving clients in the life sciences. He is also a director of Correvio International, a specialty pharmaceutical company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and he serves as a trustee of the Princeton University Rowing Association.
Paine splits his time between his home in Princeton, N.J., and Willsboro, where members of the Paine family have lived since the 1880s. As a youngster, Paine spent many summers at Camp Pok-O-Moonshine, climbing the High Peaks and later working on a dairy farm near Willsboro. Today, he spends part of the year at his camp in Willsboro where he enjoys the hiking, skiing, hunting and fishing opportunities of the North Country.
Paine shares the commitment of the entire board in maintaining Champlain National Bank as a strong, independent local bank, providing a high level of service to the communities and customers it serves. He looks forward to working with the bank’s new president and CEO, Joe Shaw, and all bank officers and staff in the attainment of that objective.
PLATTSBURGH — Randall G. Giltz has been promoted to senior vice president and Rosemary Souza-Botten to senior vice president of the corporation effective March 1, according to The Board of Directors of Northern Insuring Agency Inc.
Souza-Botten joined Northern Insuring/Northern Benefits in 1989 as an account executive in the Life and Employee Benefits Division. For more than 20 years, she has been an innovative leader guiding businesses and individuals in their insurance and benefits decisions. She will continue in this role. In addition, her responsibilities include sales management coaching of the Personal, Business and Life and Employee Benefits Divisions.
She holds two designations, Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) and Registered Employee Benefits Consultant (REBC). Both were obtained after several years of study and comprehensive examinations.
Giltz returned to Northern Insuring/Northern Benefits in 1990 after working at USF&G Insurance Co. Originally he was an underwriter in the Plattsburgh office and his responsibilities have grown to include working with the firm’s Personal and Business Insurance Companies, nurturing their excellent working relationships. In addition, he works directly with key accounts specializing in coverage for schools, nonprofit, agricultural, contracting and manufacturing organizations.
Giltz holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation. CPCUs pass 10 national exams on topics including insurance law, accounting, risk management and ethics.

Heart health supported
PLATTSBURGH — The U.S. Avenue Office of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Co. recently celebrated American Heart Month by raising funds and awareness for the American Heart Association.
The office in Plattsburgh hosted Go Red Heart Health activities throughout the month of February, including heart-healthy snacks on Fridays and a display of information from the Heart Association. Donations for the association were collected and a check for just over $112 was presented recently to the nonprofit’s local chapter.
American Heart Month and the American Heart Association’s Go Red campaign serve to raise awareness about heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among men and women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rotary Radio Day
PLATTSBURGH — The 49th annual Rotary Radio Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh and the Sunrise Rotary Club of Plattsburgh, will be held on Wednesday, April 24. Rotarians from the noontime and morning Rotary clubs will take to the airwaves on 1340 WIRY Hometown Radio to read advertisements from local businesses and donors and speak about Rotary’s impact in the local community.
WIRY turns over 12 hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) of its programming to Rotary to help raise funds for the many charities and organizations the two clubs support in the local community.
Jack Helfgott, noon club co-chair, said the two Rotary clubs are now seeking advertisements from local businesses and organizations to read live on the air.
“We hope to raise more than $25,000 for this one-day event,” he said. “It sounds like a lot of money, but there are so many individuals and businesses who give generously to this event annually. We appreciate their continued support.”
Kathy Duley, Sunrise Rotary co-chair, said that each Rotarian gets involved by selling at least one advertisement.
“It is not as labor intensive as many of our fundraising projects, such as the Mayor’s Cup Regatta, for instance,” she said. “But if every member sells even one ad we can make quite a bit of money to be used toward community humanitarian projects.”
Last year, the two clubs raised $22,700. Much of the funding went to charities and organizations in the local area including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, United Way, academic scholarships for SUNY Plattsburgh and Clinton Community College, Habitat for Humanity, YMCA, the Mental Health Association, Stop Domestic Violence, Big Buddies and the North Country Mission of Hope, to name just a few.
The Sunrise Rotary Club has also taken on a major role for the next few years in helping to fund the Universally-Accessible Max Moore Memorial Tree House along the Saranac River Trail. Last year, the club completed the Community Pavilion at Wilcox Dock and donated materials and labor to build the welcome sign at the Clinton County Airport and the gazebo at the Riverwalk in downtown Plattsburgh. The noon club recently finished construction of a pavilion at Rotary Centennial Park on the Old Base and has committed $50,000 toward the Strand Theatre Restoration project.
In addition to the many local organizations, the two clubs have provided funding to stamp out polio world-wide, establish an eye-care clinic in India, construct numerous latrines in poverty-stricken Nicaragua, and sponsor international water projects and the Shelter Box project.
To reach the $25,000 goal, Rotarians will be contacting businesses in the greater Plattsburgh area between now and April 24 seeking ads. Helfgott said that businesses, organizations and individuals who will not be contacted, but would like to support the Rotary Radio Day, can contact any of the Rotary co-chairs via email and someone will get in contact with them. PLATTSBURGH — Dannemora Federal Credit Union’s free Credit Improvement Seminar will be held Tuesday, April 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the West Side Ballroom at 253 New York Rd, Plattsburgh.

PLATTSBURGH —The SUNY Plattsburgh Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association is sponsoring the 27th Champy Advertising Awards competition.
The purpose is to recognize the high level of creativity demonstrated by local advertisers. This year the awards will be given in five categories: radio, television/video, electronic/web, print (newspaper and magazine) and a miscellaneous category, which includes brochures, direct-mail packages, menus, outdoor and other collateral material.
The competition is open to all advertisers in the North Country (Northern New York and Vermont) and is being chaired this year by Marketing major Caitlin M. Buser. Contest organizers remind advertisers that all contest submissions must have run in the media for the first time between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2012. In addition, ads must have been created and developed locally, not supplied by a manufacturer or other supplier from outside the area.
There are no limitations on the number of entries per advertiser, advertising agency or advertising medium, but each ad should be accompanied by a separate entry form and an entry fee of $10.
Students trained in advertising and marketing will judge all entries. The winners for each category will be announced at the Marketing Association’s year-end banquet to be held May 9. SARANAC LAKE — Five physician assistants on the Adirondack Health medical staff are among a small group in their field to earn a specialty credential from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Howard Glass, Dave Griffin, Dana Van Dorn, Matt Hinge and Marc Bisceglia each earned a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine. In addition to their certification as physician assistants, these distinctions are earned by meeting licensure, education and experience requirements and then passing an exam in the specialty. Other physician assistants at Adirondack Health who have earned the certification include William Marinis and Roy “Skip” Parker. All of the certified practitioners work in the Emergency Department for Adirondack Health.
“The additional specialty training received by these individuals is clear evidence of our medical staff’s dedication and commitment to high standards of care and outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. A.J. Dowidowicz, medical director for the Adirondack Health Emergency Department.
Certified physician assistants are licensed and certified health-care professionals who practice medicine with physician supervision and bring a breadth of knowledge and skills to patient care. Though their role in any particular workplace is determined in consultation with the supervising physician, certified physician assistants take medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventative care, assist in surgery, perform a variety of procedures and write prescriptions.

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women have announced that applications are now being accepted for participation in the 2013 Virginia Allan Young Careerist Program to be held Tuesday, April 30, at American Legion Post 20 on Quarry Road in Plattsburgh.
The BPW’s signature program celebrates the accomplishments of young professionals. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for encouragement, support and recognition of women and men in the early stages of their careers.
Young Careerist representatives must be between 21 and 35 years of age; must have been employed in business or professions with at least one year of full-time work experience; must be living, working or training or continuing their education in New York State; and must support the goals, objectives and legislative platform of BPW.
This year’s four-minute speech topics include:
1. If you were a TV commentator or analyst, what would be your review of the 2012 presidential election as to its impact on your generation’s future? (You may want to refer to the BPW Foundation web site Generation Y information.)
2. If you interviewed the governor of New York (or other high-ranking elected official who represents your interests), what information would you like to obtain as to current issues affecting the future of the state?
3. New York values local control: What issues do you perceive as being of paramount importance to your community?
4. If you could choose one woman whom you value as a role model, who would that person be and what are/were the accomplishments and values that made you select her?
A certificate, pin and one-year BPW membership will be awarded to the winner, as well as the opportunity to proceed to the state and regional level competitions.
