PLATTSBURGH — Aimee Wilkins of Lake Placid has been promoted to national vice president, independent consultant, effective Jan. 1  at Arbonne International.

Arbonne is a privately owned network marketing company. Since 1980, Arbonne has produced skin-care products based on botanical principles. These products are now shared throughout the world through Arbonne’s network of independent consultants. Arbonne’s product line has since grown to include both inner and outer health and beauty products that have the highest standards in quality, value and results.

Arbonne has a worldwide sales force of approximately 60,000 independent consultants. National vice presidents comprise approximately 1 percent of the sales force and are the leaders of the company.

Wilkins began her business as an Arbonne independent consultant in May 2005, became a regional vice president in Sept. 2006 and completed the qualification requirements to become a national vice president, the highest level attainable, on Dec. 31, 2011. She teaches and trains other like-minded entrepreneurs to start their own business.

Wilkins has also earned many additional perks over the past several years including Mercedes Benz bonuses, yearly tropical vacations and now a yearly trip to Maui for herself and her husband. She just returned from Arbonne’s 2012 Global Training Conference in Las Vegas where she was honored for becoming a national vice president and for promoting two new regional vice presidents in her successline. Twenty-eight other women were similarly promoted from Arbonne’s worldwide sales force in the past year.

Businesses seminar

PLATTSBURGH — Lawrence H. Meier and Thomas D. Kohler, veteran intellectual-property attorneys with the law firm Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, will team up with the North Country Chamber of Commerce to provide an introduction to intellectual property strategy and to discuss how businesses use trademarks to protect their valuable brands in a seminar on Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the chamber office.

During the section on IP strategies, Meier and Kohler will discuss the pros and cons of protecting intellectual property, when enforcement of IP rights makes sense, what approaches can be taken to reduce the cost of IP protection and how the America Invents Act may affect a company’s IP strategy.

In the second part, they will focus on trademark issues faced by established brand owners as well as new businesses seeking to create valuable brands. Topics include strategies for avoiding trademark disputes, use of federal trademark registrations to protect a brand, legal issues to consider when selecting a new brand and how to get the biggest bang for your legal buck.

Meier is a registered patent attorney and chair of DRM’s Intellectual Property Law Group. Before joining DRM, he was a senior intellectual property attorney with the IBM Corporation. While a practicing attorney, Meier also taught patent law as an adjunct professor at Vermont Law School for 17 years. He is a graduate of Vermont Law School.

Kohler earned his law degree from the College of William and Mary, Marshal-Wythe School of Law, and a Master of Laws degree in European intellectual property and comparative antitrust from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Before joining DRM in 2008, Kohler was a partner in the San Francisco office of an international law firm. A native and current resident of Upstate New York, Kohler received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University.

Photo contest

PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, a division of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, has launched its first ever photo contest titled “Then & Now,” which will run from now through Sept. 3 on Facebook.

The Adirondack Coast has long been a destination for family fun and outdoor recreation. The contest allows fans to share their memories of vacationing in Plattsburgh, on Lake Champlain and all along the Adirondack Coast. By “liking” the Adirondack Coast Facebook page, users can simply fill out the information on the “Now & Then” Sweepstakes form and submit an original photo, old or new, of their favorite Adirondack Coast memory into one of 12 categories including fishing, cycling, parks and beaches, paddling, boating and sailing, winter fun, fall foliage, history, golfing, hiking, scenics and vistas, and agriculture and farms (including orchards, maple and vineyards).

Wine, food fest

PLATTSBURGH — This fall, the Adirondack Coast Wine, Cider and Food Festival will be held featuring a day of wine and hard-cider tasting, local gourmet food, music and more.

Those who wish to attend may buy tickets now and save. Early-bird tickets are $16 for a single and $30 for a couple. Tickets are on sale now at

The festival is on Oct. 6 at The Crete Center in Plattsburgh. It will kick off at 2 p.m. and at 3 p.m. there will be live music. A fireworks show will follow at 8 p.m.

Chamber meeting

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met recently for a day of strategic planning and is asking its membership to share its vision for the chamber’s future.

Stakeholders within the community face a number of challenges. These provide a clear opportunity for future growth and success for its membership and the community at large. The chamber in its role as problem solver, solution provider and community partner will play a fundamental leadership role, and a plan of action was developed to ensure immediate and continued member support.

A number of focus areas and solutions will be revealed at a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall. At this meeting, the membership and public will have the opportunity to influence the chamber’s plan in moving forward.

Stores rebranded

AKWESASNE — Tarbell Management Group LLC has rebranded its convenience stores and fuel stations at Akwesasne.

Now, all of TMG’s retail locations, formerly known as Western Door, Eastern Door and Bear’s Den Trading Post, will be re-branded as Bear’s Den. Bear’s Den has been a long-standing business in the community and dates back to 1953 when its founder, Theresa Bear, first opened the two-pump Texaco gas station which started the Tarbell’s business more than 59 years ago. Bear’s Den received a new logo based on the original logo.

The site formerly known as Western Door received a complete renovation, a larger 5,800-sq.-ft. store and added two franchises, Tim Hortons and Papa John’s. The former Eastern Door site will receive new signage and a store reset with some added products. The main Bear’s Den will be undergoing a renovation with new colors, a fresher look, a large floor space and will be consolidating some gift-shop items into the new store layout, which will be completed this summer.

This location will also receive a Tim Hortons self-service beverage kiosk, which is scheduled for this summer during the renovation.

All Bear’s Den locations will continue to have the products everyone is looking for and provide fast, friendly service to the community and guests.
