Donation to vets

DANNEMORA — The Dannemora Federal Credit Union Board of Directors recently approved a donation of $20,000 to the North Country Vietnam Veterans Association Inc.

The NCVA is a not-for-profit veterans organization servicing veterans and their families. It serves veterans in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties as well as veterans in northern Vermont and Quebec. Some of the main projects the NCVA is involved in are annual regional educational scholarships for children of veterans, the annual Christmas food basket program serving approximately 50 to 60 families, assisting veterans in developing VA compensation claims, providing peer group counseling to veterans and outreach referral services for veterans and families of veterans in need.

By making this donation, Dannemora FCU continues a lengthy tradition of support to area veterans.

In addition to the NCVA donation, DFCU has recently supported the following: Trick-Or-Treat on Safety Street, Benefit for Chad Allen, JCEO Outreach Center, Elmore SPCA, Foundation of CVPH, Hospice of the North Country, Imaginarium Children’s Museum, NCCA Outdoor Education Experience, the Christmas Bureau, Children’s Miracle Network, Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club, ARC Festival of Lights and Mountain Lake PBS.

DFCU branch office locations are at 50 State Road, Dannemora; 344 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh; 122 New York Road, Plattsburgh; and 10 Elm Street, Champlain.

Scholarships offered

PLATTSBURGH — UFirst Federal Credit Union is offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. UFirst FCU is participating in the Credit Union Association of New York’s statewide credit union scholarship program, which provides credit union members with $500 or $1,000 scholarships.

To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending two- or four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2014. They must also be members of UFirst FCU or another participating New York credit union.

Applicants will be competing against other credit union members from across the state. They will be judged based upon academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities and the quality of written essays. Last year, the state association awarded $13,000 in scholarships through the program. In addition, UFirst FCU awarded $1,500 to three local students in 2013.
