PPR crackerjack 1 color 0819

P-R PHOTO/JULIE ROBINSON ROBARDS Sailor Jack and his dog, Bingo, were introduced as the Cracker Jack mascots in 1918 and registered as a trademark the following year. The sailor boy was modeled after 8-year-old Robert Rueckheim, nephew of the company founder who died of pneumonia shortly after the image was created. Bingo was based on a real-life dog named Russell, an adopted stray belonging to Henry Eckstein. Eckstein invented the waxed box that kept Cracker Jack candy popcorn and peanuts fresh.
