Image/Geological Society of America This geologic map, which was published in a paper by Dr. Nicholas W. Hayman and Dr. W.S.F. Kidd in the April 2002 Geological Society of America Bulletin of New England, shows how ancient rock structures and inactive faults layer rock and sediment below the Northeast. The rock structures formed in tectonic movement as the Earth's crust moved and cooled hundreds of millions of years ago.
